Today is World AIDS Day...a day for remembering those whose lives have been lost and a time for recommiting ourselves to saving lives in the future.
"Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. The World AIDS Day theme for 2010 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. World AIDS Day is important for reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done."
"According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.3 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2009 some 2.6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million people died from AIDS."
HIV/AIDS has been a global epidemic for more than 27 years. Most of today's youth have never know a world without it. Having worked for many years as a Development Director for an AIDS Service Organization, I have seen first hand the devastating effects of this disease. Strides have been made - but not enough.. the time is now to prevent the spread of this pandemic - through awareness, care, prevention, education and research. Glad to see you posted this. I though to do something on Facebook but didn't think about my blog.
Have a great day, Lisa! xoxo Diane
Thanks for the reminder. I will also post something on my blogs about this day!
Thanks for sharing.
good for you lisa - thank you for posting this... somehow yesterday got away from me and i am sorry for it... how interesting that you worked there... funny how our kids don't know much about it... yet we all know people who died from it... we cannot let their deaths go in vain...
thanks again - this is such an important topic...
Thank you for reminding us of this horrible epdemic Lisa, it is so important to remember. Hugs, Riki
thank you so much for posting this. i typically remember, having lost friends to this in the past (and with friends currently struggling) but this year i was side tracked, unfortunately. i forgot that you had worked with people with hiv and aids -- you're such a wonderful lady!
I'm back after having no internet for the last four days, argggh! A timely, thought provoking post Lisa. I have marched in the candlelight vigils here through the centre of the city in rememberance of those who have died from this terrible disease. We have watched the passing of friends including some we marched alongside. Such a tragedy this epidemic. Here, here to the voice that reminds us not to forget! Mwah!
